The history of electricity begins with William Gilbert, an English scientist who, in 1600, discovered that certain substances could be rubbed together to create static electricity.
Gilbert also coined the term “electricity”. In 1752, Benjamin Franklin conducted his famous kite experiment, proving that lightning is a form of electricity. Franklin also invented the lightning rod.
In 1831, Michael Faraday discovered electromagnetic induction, the principle behind generators and motors. In 1879, Thomas Edison invented the light bulb. In 1882, Edison built the first power plant in New York City.
