Sussex county fairgrounds events

August is upon us, and it may seem like summer is sliding toward a close. The nights get a bit cooler, students head back to school and getaways to the Shore or pool will soon wrap up.

But there's still one summer tradition ahead: The annual New Jersey State Fair and Sussex County Farm & Horse Show starts on Friday.

Beginning in 1924 as the Sussex County Horse Show, the annual extravaganza at the County Fairgrounds in Augusta has grown tremendously.

While the event keeps in touch with its agricultural roots, there are dozens of varied activities throughout the nine-day run, from monster trucks to art exhibits, a petting zoo, pig races, musical performances and, of course, funnel cake.

For those looking for a last hoorah of summer, mark your calendars for Aug.
